He attended the Juilliard School in New York and the New England Conservatory in Boston, studying with Charles Kavalovski. Luiz was a private student of Stefan Dohr in Berlin from 2001 to 2003.

He joined the renowned Empire Brass from 1995 to 1997, was solo horn of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra from 1997 to 2001, and from 2002 to 2006, was a guest artist of the German Brass. While in Germany he participated on several occasions as solo horn in performances, recordings and tours of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphonieorchester, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, WDR Cologne, RSO Frankfurt, Tonhalle Zurich, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, among others with the most renowned conductors.

Luiz has won awards in various competitions such as Sul America Award (1988), the Eldorado Award (1989) and 1st place in Tilden Prize New York (1993). He is currently solo horn of the Sao Paulo Symphony orchestra. He served on the faculty of several international music festivals, such as Instrumenta Verano in Mexico and the Pacific Music Festival in Japan.
