Hi! I am Herman van Kogelenberg, Principal Flute of the Munich Philharmonic, and former professor at the Royal Conservatory The Hague and Rotterdam Codarts Conservatory.
Whilst studying, Herman was appointed principal flute with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège in 1999. He resigned from the orchestra to join the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam from 2003 until 2010. An invitation by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and their musical director Yannick Nézet-Séguin to become their principal flute led to Rotterdam in 2010, and in September 2013 he was appointed principal flutist of the Münchner Philharmoniker under Lorin Maazel. With the Münchner Philharmoniker he appeared as a soloist in 2016 and 2018. Since 2017 he is also solo flutist of Orchestra Mozart, founded by Claudio Abbado.
Regular guest appearances with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe complete the agenda.
Herman van Kogelenberg started to learn flute at an early age with Willem Tonnaer and went on to attend the conservatories of Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague where he studied with Abbie de Quant and Emily Beynon.
Herman van Kogelenberg regularly appears as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra player in festivals worldwide and is a founder member of the Farkas Quintet Amsterdam since 1997. The Farkas Quintet Amsterdam is regarded as Netherlands’ premier woodwind quintet and toured extensively throughout the Netherlands and Europe. Recent cd releases of this ensemble include french repertoire, Haydn Seven Last Words and the world’s first live recording of the Arnold Schönberg Wind Quintet opus 26.
A passionate and dedicated teacher, Herman van Kogelenberg is regularly invited to give masterclasses in Europe, USA, South America and Asia. As faculty member at the Pacific Music Festival Japan; at the Manhattan School of Music New York, the University of California Los Angeles, Shanghai Conservatory of Music; Munich, Basel, Bern and Geneva conservatories, Kobe University, or in Tokyo, Seoul, Taiwan and Brasil.

Outstanding!
Mr. Herman van Kogelenberg was very helpful during my private lesson with him. He explained not only how to play the notes, but also how to show the music in every line and showed me how to add more emotion into my playing. Mr. Kogelenberg also has a lot of orchestral experience and gave me tips for flute and piccolo, as well as general audition advice. Throughout the lesson, he was funny and lively and I highly recommend him for anyone who wants to learn more about playing music on the flute.
I am very glad that I had the opportunity of taking flute lessons for 1,5 year with Herman van Kogelenberg at the conservatory of Rotterdam. He helped me play very natural and I found his musical interpretation very interesting and inspiring. He developed my musical personality a lot, he learn me that the music is always the starting point also in technical things. He gives lessons with a lot of energy, fun and passion. I recommend him as a great flutist and teacher!
Herman van Kogelenberg has been extremely important in my development as a musician. He was a great support by preparing orchestra auditions. He can explain very good how to play the difficult orchestra excerpts because he has a lot of experience in playing in orchestras. He did help me a lot with playing the music very naturally and with express myself as an individual and not a copy of someone.
