Nicolaj is a professional violist and composer, and passionate teacher of all things viola and music theory/technology.
I come from a classical background, and honed my craft as an orchestral player for 10 years in many different orchestras in Denmark and Southern Sweden. I then "broke free" and spent 3 years in Hanoi, Vietnam where I ran a small recording studio. I write and record string arrangements in all sorts of styles for people around the world, as well as compose my own music. I like to explore the creative possibilities right where traditional musicianship and modern technology meet. I believe the viola is the coolest instrument out there - I love the way it sounds, how it feels to play it - not only can us violists steal repertoire from both the cello and the violin, the viola also has an incredible potential for doing some really cool things.
When it comes to teaching, I believe that anything can be learned, and that learning and practicing should above all be a creative and fun endeavour. My ultimate goal is to teach you how to teach yourself, and to help you develop your own musical vision, and to do so while building a solid technical foundation. I may do a lot of crazy things with my viola, but I also still practice my scales and etudes every day - so whether you want to learn the Stamitz concerto, or jam with a looper app on your phone, I can help you. And of you want to do both, the all the better!
I have taught students of all levels, from age 4 and up. I also worked two years as a violin and viola teacher at United Nations School in Hanoi, where I helped develop the school's string program. Whatever your level and goal is, it will be my pleasure to help you. I also enjoy teaching music theory and composition, and can help you truly understand the building blocks of music - and get you started on creating your own music.
