I am a former Principal Bassist of the London Symphony Orchestra and I have over 45 years of successful teaching experience.
Very few players anywhere have all my playing experiences in solo, chamber and orchestral settings. I teach bassists of all persuasions, in all tunings, all bow types, all playing postures and in virtually all repertoire. If you want, I can teach you how to play effortlessly with the technique I advocate in my Canadian School of the Double Bass publication "Daily Studies".
I have also coached advanced players for orchestral auditions and taught masterclasses all around the world for decades. I usually provide to students my own editions of solos, excerpts etc..as well as my fingering system of Intervals, Scale, Chords and Arpeggios.
I have several solo recordings; my 2010 release of "Garden Scene" won the Juno Award for most outstanding classical recording in Canada. In 2013 "Brothers in Brahms" won the Opus Prize for Quebec. My early recordings of Bottesini on the NAXOS label are still recognized as definitive.
Lately I have been focused on recording the all Bach Cello Suites and I launched that project last year on YouTube with a very successful video of the Sixth Suite which has received overwhelming critical acclaim.
Twice I have been honored by the International Society of Bassists with their "Special Recognition Awards"; in 2011 for Solo Performance and in 2015 for Orchestral Performance. I am the only player in their history to have received both awards.
I am well known for tuning my bass in the historically correct fifths but someone can study with me for months and that fact might never come up in our discourse. The effortless left hand technique which I do talk about does make playing in fifths possible, but it also allows for beautiful phrasing and expressive vibrato and shifting to be possible too.
I am an easy going, generous person who doesn't watch the clock in lessons and I really do want to share the knowledge and the joy of music I have garnered over my career.
In the free introduction lesson I offer, I will listen to what you would like to accomplish and where your interests and priorities lie, and I will offer you straight answers about exactly what I think I could do for you and how we would go about that.
