James Turnbull

I enjoy teaching & performing solo, chamber music & orchestral concerts. Get in touch to find out how I can help you & your oboe playing!

I am dedicated to broadening the appeal of the oboe and encouraging more people to start learning the instrument. In 2013 I launched a website LearnToPlayTheOboe.com which offers support to those starting to learn the oboe.

Over the past decade I’ve worked with all ages and stages of development with the oboe. I am very passionate about teaching the oboe and currently teach at the Royal College of Music Junior Department as well as various schools such as the Purcell School in London.

Whether you are new to the oboe, or returning after some time away from the instrument, I work hard to find the best approach that suits your needs and am happy to cover all aspects of playing and reed making. As a performer I’ve spend much of my career specialising in contemporary music and so can also offer coaching on newer works that require extended techniques as well as the traditional oboe repertoire that we all enjoy to play.
