I'm a concert pianist based in Paris and a Professor at the Royal College of Music of London for the last 11 years.
Edna Stern began her studies in Israel with Viktor Derevianko, a student of Heinrich Neuhaus, continuing with Krystian Zimerman at the Basel Hochschule and with Leon Fleisher at the Peabody Institute and at the Lake Como International Piano Foundation. Her recordings repertoire ranges from Bach to Barber, and is highly praised by critics, receiving such awards as Diapason d’Or, Diapason Découverte, Arte Best CD, Gramophone upcoming artist, and Sélection Le Monde. Her recent recording dedicated to Hélène de Montgeroult received a Critic’s Choice of the Year of the Gramophone Magazine and Choice of France Musique.
Edna Stern performs at prestigious halls and festivals such as the Philharmonie de Paris, Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, Munich’s Hekulessaal, Paris’ Châtelet Theater, Moscow’s Music-House, Petronas in Kuala Lumpur and Musashino hall in Tokyo; performing in solo recitals and with orchestras.
Stern gives masterclasses all over the world, in such places as the CNSM of Paris, Rutgers University, and Tel-Aviv Zubin Mehta School of Music. Stern likes to collaborate with great artists of different fields, and has often worked with film and theater director Amos Gitaï, as well as Etoile/Leading principal dancer from the Paris Opera, Agnès Letestu.
She has been a professor at the Royal College of London since 2009.
Teaching online: Given the world's situation, I've recently discovered teaching online. I soon realized that my students were gaining through this method a new perspective and understanding of what I was teaching. Before, when I was teaching in the classroom, I would often correct them by an explanation followed by an example of how to do it at the piano. It was often unclear to me, whether their improvement was due to a lucky imitation (that is sometimes easily forgotten after the lesson) or by a true understanding. Today my method is to explain with less examples at the piano, so that they understand the issues first intellectually. Their correction process is not based then on imitation anymore, but on finding their own way through their understanding. I usually ask the student to send me a video the day before the online lesson, which gives me time to prepare the lesson and build it by the topic's priority so as to create a general understanding of the piece itself, and then walk through more specifically on what needs to be done in order to improve the student's playing.

I took several piano lessons with Edna and found them very helpful. Edna is intelligent, musical, creative, and a good communicator. In addition, she comes thoroughly prepared for lessons so the time together is used extremely efficiently. She is also able/willing to answer questions before and after lessons which is generous of her. Finally, she is supportive and encouraging when the student is facing difficulties. I'd highly recommend her to anyone seeking to improve their piano playing.
Prof. Edna Stern is a very talented pianist who has a very delicate understanding of music, she can play very beautifully, and has a lot of experience playing music. She has a very broad range of knowledge, she isalways able to find the problems of students, and give very useful solutions. She is also an enthusiastic teacher, always helping me solve all kinds of problems, she is a very responsible teacher. She asks to send her a recording before the next class, which would save class time, and allow her to give more useful suggestions, always thinking about her students. I have been in class with her for about half a year, and my piano skills have improved rapidly. Both my technique and understanding of music have greatly improved. She is not only a teacher who can take care of the students' mental well-being, but also a teacher who can guide the students in the piano. Ihighly recommend this teacher, and looking forward to having regular class with her and further improving in music
