Barrick Stees

I am the Assistant Principal Bassoonist of the Cleveland Orchestra and teach at The Cleveland Institute of Music and Kent///Blossom Music.

In addition to my many tours with The Cleveland Orchestra, my love of teaching and performing has taken me to many places around the world. Favorites include Buenos Aires, Bogota, Hong Kong and Chengdu and Spoleto, Italy.

I have performed and taught extensively throughout the United States as well. I'm a frequent guest artist at many of the country's major music schools.

Awarded the 2001 Presidential Scholar Teacher Recognition Award from the United States Secretary of Education, he has taught at Michigan State University, the Interlochen Arts Camp, the Interlochen Arts Academy, and the Brevard Music Center. He was previously Principal Bassoonist with the Hartford Symphony and has played with the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Detroit Symphony.

My enthusiasm for teaching extends to the Internet as well. My website, www.steesbassoon.com, contains a wealth of information for students and young professionals. In my blog, www.steesbassoon.blogspot.com, I share information about reedmaking, auditions, practicing and the life of an orchestral musician.

I have studied with Mr. Stees for the last four years as an undergraduate at the Cleveland Institute of Music. I cannot recommend him enough as a teacher! To me, Mr. Stees' teaching is the perfect combination of art and craft --- how to make music, and how to play the bassoon well. He has demonstrated nothing but patience and understanding with me, while never allowing for anything less than my best playing. In addition to all that, Mr. Stees accepts the value and worth of musical interpretations with which he might disagree, encouraging individual students to find their individual voice. There has never been the slightest hint of "it's my way or the highway" with his teaching. I would be remiss if I did not mention Mr. Stees's incredible dedication to his students. Even at times when I was well aware he was extremely busy with his own job and commitments, he was always willing to offer extra help. He is an extraordinary teacher, and an extraordinary human being.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Barry for fifteen years. I began studying with him when I was a teenager and can honestly say I wouldn’t have had half of my successes without his teaching and mentorship for so many years. He is an extremely dedicated teacher. He is patient and understanding yet very demanding. His approach is individualized for each student and he has great suggestions for helping with technique, reed making and he will always push you to your highest musical potential. He creates an individual performer with his unique approach to teaching. He doesn’t make you do whatever he does; he encourages you to become your own artist. Not only is Barry a great teacher, but he performs what he preaches. Listen to his solo recordings or if you are so lucky, attend a Cleveland Orchestra concert and his playing will never disappoint!
